McKinnon, Christel and Dan Fund

Christel McKinnon moved to this area in 1918, when she was 8. She grew up and was educated in North Cobalt.  She married Dan McKinnon, a master mechanic, who was born in County Inverness, Nova Scotia, and  who worked in the Matachewan mines and other places across Ontario. Dan died in 1975. Christel worked for Northern Telephone and Wilson Pharmacy, and later operated her own women’s clothing store in Haileybury.  She had an eye for patterns and colours, and loved gardens and flowers.

Having lived through the Depression Christel was thrifty and prudent and possessed a keen mind. She was an active member of the Catholic Women’s League and was independent and resourceful and lived alone into her nineties.

Christel had an interest in local art and artists, and after her death her great nephews and great nieces  established an endowment to be invested in perpetuity and the income from the investment used to promote local art and support local artists. Their gift will continue to do this for years to come.
