Walter Light Memorial Scholarship Fund

Walter Light grew up in Cobalt and graduated from Cobalt High School. He went on to join the RCAF in 1942, and after service overseas, attended Queen’s University. He began his career with Bell Canada, and became president of Northern Telecom Limited in 1979 and chairman in 1982. He retired in 1985.

Although he had received both the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario, one of the highlights of his career was his induction into the Temiskaming District Secondary School’s Hall of Fame in 1994. Walter was proud of his roots in the North and considered this a great honour. He wore the cape from the Cobalt Public School that he was given with pride.

After his death his wife Margaret established a scholarship for a student of our area who is "inspired to achieve goals, follow dreams and persistently and courageously pursue excellence" which Walter had felt was of primary importance. She did this be establishing a fund to be invested in perpetuity, and the income from the fund used to fund the scholarship.
